At The Elms we are committed to being a positive and stable setting that supports pupils to continue their education, whether it be in a mainstream school, the Maples or specialist setting. Pupils are with us for varying amounts of time, therefore our curriculum needs to be flexible, accessible and designed to enable pupils to progress positively on their educational journey and prepare them for the next steps. Our aim is to provide a curriculum that allows pupils to show what they are capable of in a nurturing environment.
The curriculum is designed to:
- Re engage pupils in education
- Support all pupils to develop the skills, behaviours and attitudes that will enable them to reintegrate to and be successful in their next phase of education
- To develop emotional and academic resilience to help them have a positive experience of education
- Inspire and motivate pupils, creating a willingness to learn
- To aim to provide a curriculum which addresses the gaps in pupil knowledge and learning
- Focus on developing pupils’ emotional wellbeing and mental health
Reading and Phonics
In the Elms, pupils undergo comprehensive baseline assessments in reading, spelling, and writing upon arrival; allowing identification and specific targeted areas for improvement. The upcoming implementation of IDL literacy and numeracy software will provide personalised support led by an intervention tutor. To foster a love for reading, we encourage independent and guided reading sessions, complemented by the Renaissance Programme, which tailors reading recommendations and rewards students for their progress. This holistic approach is designed to empower students, enhance their reading confidence, and encourage ownership of their learning journey. This is all underpinned with the Abigail Steel phonics program.
